DOVER, Fla. – The Saint Leo University men’s and women’s cross country teams opened its 2009 season at the annual UT Early Bird Classic following a nearly two hour delay due to lightning. Full standings of the event are still not available, although individual tallies have recently been made available.
Due to the delay, both the men’s and women’s squads were forced to run a 5K race together. Under normal circumstances both the men’s and women’s teams would run separately, with the men running the 8K.
On the women’s side, Alison Luthman posted the best overall time for the Lions, crossing the finish line in a time of 22:29. Her teammate, freshman Jillian Browne, was nipping at her heels closing the race with a time of 22:32. Sophomore sensation Kelsey Bradley was the third Lion to break the tape with a time of 22:43. Tanja Redmond broke the 23-minute mark, as well, posting a time of 22:55.
The men sprinted from the starting line at the same time as the women. Freshman Eric Dirth, in his first collegiate race, concluded the race as SLU’s top finisher with a time of 18:34. Matt Attal and Mike Berry also impressed in the first race of the season posting times of 18:37 and 18:53, respectively.
Complete individual times can be found in the box score with full results, including team points and positions, to be made public when full results become final.
