BRANDON, Fla. – The Saint Leo University men’s and women’s cross country teams finished fifth and sixth respectively as they competed in the Sunshine State Conference Championships hosted by the University of Tampa at the Brandon Trails on Saturday morning.
The men, who finished with 145 points and were behind conference champion Florida Southern, saw the highest finishing position go to Javier Beuzeville in eighth place. Beuzeville led for over three miles but was passed up in the later portion to finish 25:37, 36 seconds behind the race winner. His eighth place finish gives him an All-Conference nod in 2008.
For the remainder of the Lion runners, Mike Berry finished in 33rd with a time of 28:29 while Matt Attal finished 41st, clocking in at 29:19. Travis Van Buren (29:49), Matt Crosta (32:22) and Carson Holton (38:04) rounded out the scoring in 44th, 49th, and 51st place respectively.
On the women’s side, the Lions finished in sixth place with 151 points behind host Spartans who claimed the championship. The highest finishing spot for the Green & Gold went to freshman Kelsey Bradley, crossing the line with a time of 25:29 in 17th place. Alison Luthman was the next Lions to cross the finish line in 22nd place with a time of 26:30.
Dana Graham (30th, 27:23) was the first of five Lion runners who finished between 30th and 38th place with Mindy Pierce (33rd, 28:12), Julie Carusone (34th, 28:13), Allison Cary (35th, 28:19) and Heather Laws (38th, 29:21) rounding out the SLU ladies that placed in the championship.
