Women's Cross Country Earns Eighth Place at Early Bird Invitational

TAMPA, Fla.—In the first meet of the 2012 fall cross country season, the Saint Leo University women's cross country team  finished eighth overall at the Early Bird Classic hosted by the University of Tampa, Friday night from the Sydney Dover Trails. The team finished with a time of 1:51:55.25.

Senior Andrea Maxwell led all Lions in the individual competition finishing 31th overall in her first race back from injury. She finished with 23 total points, a final time of 21:34.18, and an average mile time of 6:56.6. The second best individual performance from the Lions came from Elyse Snyder with a final time of 21:46.32.

Finishing first overall of the 13-team competition was the University of Tampa with a final time of 1:39:11.46. They were followed by Palm Beach Atlantic with a time of 1:44:48.79, and the Savannah College of Art & Design at 1:45:46.34.

In addition to the outstanding performances from Maxwell and Snyder, the Lions had multiple other runners with strong showings in the 133 person race. Jillian Browne finished in 49th place with her final time of 22:19.86 and not far behind was Christine Hartley with a total time of 22:58.15. Rounding out the Lions were Shelby Adams, Kelsey Bradley, Lee Ann Antuna, and Mariah Moss.

The Lions will look to carry momentum from the opening-day performance into their next race, the USF Invitational on Sept. 7.
