Novotna, Lions Ready for NCAA South Region

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Fresh off her SSC Runner and Freshman of the Year selections, Tereza Novotna, and the rest of her Lions' teammates, look to make a push at Saturday's NCAA South Region run.

Taking to the Dover Trails course for the second time in 2011, both Lions' teams look to finish higher than their current ninth-place regional ranking, while taking down some of their SSC rivals.

In addition, Novotna, the Lions' standout freshman runner, comes into the race with the fastest 6K time in field, achieved two weeks ago at the Sunshine State Conference Championships.

With only the top-two individuals from non-qualifying teams earning a spot at nationals, set for November 19 in Spokane, Wash., Novotna will lean on her teammates to help her achieve the goal. No Saint Leo runner has ever achieved a spot at the NCAA Championships.

The women are a legitimate threat on the course in 2011, as multiple runners have achieved new personal bests and climbed up the all-time records list. As a result, the women achieved their highest south region ranking, seventh, in program history.

Also look for Jillian Browne, as well as the freshman pair of Amanda Leon and Holly Blackburn, to make a dent for the Green and Gold.

On the men's side, Michael Berry and Jon Norris will front the Lions' charge into their first 10K of the season.

Saint Leo currently owns the ninth spot in the latest south region poll, a position they've held since the preseason.  Also with top-10 aspirations, the Lions' trio of Berry, Norris, and Brian Haynes look to make Saint Leo a significant player in the final results.

The women are scheduled to begin the meet at 8 a.m., with the men to follow at 9 p.m. Awards will be presented at the finish line for the top-15 competitors on each side. Stay current with for news, updates, and information on the men's cross country team.
