LEXINGTON, Ky. – Saint Leo volleyball seniors Jamee Townsend and Hope Lemon were named American Volleyball Coaches Association All-America Honorable Mention on Wednesday, Dec. 7, by the AVCA Division II All-America Committee.
Townsend was named to the AVCA All-South Region Team, the D2CCA All-South Region Team, the NCAA South Region All-Tournament Team, the All-SSC First Team, and earned three SSC Defensive Player of the Week honors this season. She tallied 658 digs this season and moved her career total to 1,406, good for third all-time in Saint Leo history. The libero from Plant City, Fla., led the SSC in digs per set with 5.39 on the season, and in SSC-only play, she increased her per set average to 5.42.
Lemon has been the leading point scorer for the Lions this season, averaging 3.9 points per set. She scores most of her points on the attack, as she puts down 3.30 kills per set, but she also sneaks additional points off her serve, having scored a team-high 46 aces this season. The outside from Cedar Park, Texas, has tallied 373 kills this season, moving her career total to 1,097, which places her to fifth all-time in Saint Leo records. Lemon was also named to the AVCA All-South Region team and the All-Sunshine State Conference First Team following the regular season.
The two senior captains guided the Lions to a 20-12 overall record, and a 12-4 SSC record that landed them the Sunshine State Conference Title, and a season-sweep of the University of Tampa, a program first. The Saint Leo volleyball team wrapped up the 2016 season as the No. 2 seed in the NCAA South Region tournament but were halted by a hot Florida Southern team, who took down the Lions, 3-2, in the opening round.
