Volleyball downs Barry, 3-1, in final home match

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo volleyball took down Barry in the final home match of the season on Wednesday night, 3-1; 25-14, 25-23, 21-25, 25-17, to move to 19-10 and 11-4 in Sunshine State Conference play.

The Lions' win ties them with Tampa at 11-4 atop the league standings. This win sets up both teams for an important weekend of action as they both play Nova Southeastern to close out SSC play, and they also will take on No. 10 Palm Beach Atlantic for a key in-region match.

On Wednesday evening, Saint Leo came out firing in the first set, hitting .357 with 11 kills. The squad made just one hitting error. Victoria Omoregie put down five kills in the set, while Barry's Jaeda Allen matched with five. Barry hit just .147 and was only able to side out in 37-percent of their opportunities.

Barry bounced back in the second set, hitting .300 with 15 kills, but it was not enough as the Lions put down 19 kills in the set. Katie Adamson was a crucial part of the Lions offense as the senior middle blocker put down four kills without committing a single error.

Barry came out of the break firing, putting down 14 kills on .333 hitting as a team. Allen put down four kills, while Ivana Didanovic added four as well. Both were errorless in the set. Barry also tallied three team blocks in the set to help hold the Lions to just .159 hitting.

In the fourth set, it was the hot hand of Annabella Arcari that led the way for the Lions. Arcari tallied a perfect five kills on all five of her attempts. The Lions only committed one error in the entire fourth set and hit .458 to close out the match.

Both squads saw impressive performances from their duos of middles. Saint Leo saw Arcari and Adamson combined for 19 kills on 31 attempts, with just one hitting error. Arcari led with 11 kills on 16 attempts with no errors for a clip of .688, while Adamson added eight kills on 15 attempts with just one error, for a clip of .467. Barry's Didanovic tallied 11 kills on .385 hitting, while her counterpart in Kristina Filimonova added nine kills on .421.

Britt Sederholm finished the match with a double-double for the Lions with 13 kills and 13 digs. She added a team-high four blocks as well. Omoregie added 11 kills, three digs, and two blocks.  Barry's Allen led all hitters with 17 kills.

Defensively, Jamee Townsend scooped up 22 digs. Her 22 digs gives her 1336 for her career and moves her into sole possession of third place on the Saint Leo career digs list. Junior Jenya Kruglova tagged on 17 digs as well.

Junior setter Maddy Powell dished out 41 assists, added seven digs, six kills, and a service ace.

The Lions hit the road to take on Nova Southeastern on Friday night at 7 p.m., and then they head to No. 10 PBA on Saturday for a 4 p.m. match.
