Volleyball drops mid-week match at Eckerd, 3-0

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Saint Leo volleyball team fell on Tuesday evening to Eckerd College, 3-0; 25-23, 26-24, 25-23, in St. Petersburg in a mid-week Sunshine State Conference match.

The Lions moved to 8-5, 2-2 in the SSC, while Eckerd moved to 9-4, 3-1 in SSC action.

In the first set, Eckerd used 15 kills to muscle past the Lions in a very even opening affair. Both teams made minimal errors, but the Tritons' side-out percentage helped them sneak out the tight first set, 25-23.

The second set was an offensive onslaught for both squads. Saint Leo put down 17 kills on a clip of .350 off Anna Garrett's 14 assists, while Eckerd mirrored the .350 hitting percentage, but put down 18 kills while scooping 17 digs. Hope Lemon put down seven kills in the second set alone, while Eckerd's Kali Boatwright did the same. Eckerd snagged the second set, 26-24, to send them to a 2-0 lead heading into the break.

It was the third set to decide the match and the Tritons jumped on the Lions early, looking using a 7-2 lead to take the match. However, the Lions battled their way back into the match, using a two-setter system. Maddy Powell came in the front row, providing offense and a block, while Garrett distributed the rock from the back row. An additional spark was provided by defensive specialist Reggie Van Devender, who snuck in two kills on awareness plays that caught the Tritons off guard, and boosted the Lions momentum. Saint Leo was able to overcome the deficit and tie the set at 23-all. Despite the effort and guts, the Lions were unable to complete the comeback and dropped the set 25-23.

Powell finished the game with four kills, six digs, and 12 assists, while Garrett dished out 18 assists, and added three digs and a kill.

Lemon finished the match with 10 kills, while junior Britt Sederholm added nine. The Lions' trio of middles combined for 11 kills on 20 attempts, while just committing one error. Annabella Arcari led with six kills on a clip of .417, while senior Katie Adamson added four kills on seven attempts while committing no errors. Sophomore Dallas Jasper went one-for-one on her attempts.

Defensively, senior Jamee Townsend scooped up 13 digs and is now just 14 shy of 1,000 for her career.

Saint Leo returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 1 at Florida Tech in a 4 p.m. match.
