SAINT LEO, Fla. – With the offseason coming to a close, the Saint Leo University volleyball team is set to announce its upcoming 2014 schedule. The Lions' competitive season features five teams ranked on the final AVCA Division II poll and three regional champions from the 2013 campaign.
Head coach Sam Cibrone's squad ended 2013 with a South Regional tournament appearance after finishing third in the Sunshine State Conference behind a 23-11 overall record. Cibrone enters his eleventh season at the helm of the program and owns a 185-133 record during his tenure. The 2014 season boasts 34 games, nine of which will be played at home in the Marion Bowman Center.
Outside hitting tandem Campbell and Warren were first and second on the team in kills respectively, as the former grounded 384 while the latter amassed 314. Campbell was second on the team with 296 digs while Warren served up a team leading 38 aces in her junior campaign.
Griffith-Hardy electrified the right side with 195 kills at a torrid .330 attack percentage. Libero Santiago anchored the Saint Leo defense, setting the single-season dig mark with 549 her junior year.
Sophomore outside hitter Hope Lemon will look to build off a promising freshman season where she grounded 172 kills at a polished .310 attack clip.
The Green and Gold will begin the season in the Alaskan frontier, playing a pair of foes in Alaska-Anchorage and 2013 East region winner, LIU-Post. The four-game set is slated for the weekend of Sep. 5 before returning to Florida for the Lynn University Tournament. The event features competition from the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez, Fort Valley State and Colorado Christian as the Saint Leo squad will play seven contests in a short two-week span.
The team opens SSC play the following weekend, facing FIT in the home-opener. After concluding the first round of conference play, the Lions will begin another set of back-to-back tournament appearances, opening the Palm Beach Tournament against reigning Atlantic regional victor Wheeling Jesuit. The tournament begins Oct. 11 and features a Saturday doubleheader against WJU and Cedarville followed by a Tuesday showdown with Weber International (Oct. 14).
Saint Leo will play a set of crucial regional opponents in the annual South Region Crossover, hosted by Florida Southern. The Green and Gold open up play against top-25 talent West Florida on Oct. 17, and then finish the day facing North Alabama. Day two showcases Valdosta State and Lee University to round out the crossover.
The regular season will conclude with the second round of SSC contests before awaiting postseason selection in November.
