FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. – After dropping a Sunshine State Conference road match to Lynn Friday night, the Lions bounced back to defeat the Nova Southeastern Sharks by a 3-0 score (25-20, 25-10, 25-21) and improve to 17-7 on the season. The win pushed the Lions to a 5-3 SSC record this year.
The Lions exploded offensively to jumpstart the first set, taking a lead early on and holding steady for the remainder of the game. After a first set victory, the momentum pushed Saint Leo to a 3-0 sweep of the Nova Southeastern Sharks.
Juniors Lauren Campbell and Tawni Warren led the offense for the Lions, leading Saint Leo to an outstanding .395 attack percentage. The pair stood atop the stat leaderboard for both teams, with Campbell notching 17 kills and Warren collecting 13 on the night. Senior middle blocker Meghan Donovan and junior outside hitter Alexa Griffith-Hardy also tallied nine kills apiece to propel the Lions to a total of 58 kills in just three sets.
Defensively, Cambell and Warren also led the Lions in digs with 17 and 14, respectively. In addition, junior libero Yaidimar Santiago notched 13.
In typical fashion, senior setter Jaclyn Mailoto tallied 49 assists to improve to just under 1,000 assists on the season. Her assists per set percentage ranks 8th among all NCAA Division II volleyball players and puts her on track to breaking the Saint Leo all-team single season record.
The Lions volleyball team will get back in action on Tuesday, October 29 when they battle the visiting Florida Southern Mocs for the second time this season.
