SAINT LEO, Fla. – After falling in heartbreaking action to the No. 3 Tampa Spartans on Friday night, the Lions bounced back on Saturday afternoon and took home a 3-0 win over the visiting Rollins College Tars. The win signaled the Lions' first Sunshine State Conference win of the season and improved their record to 11-5.
The Lions dominated the first set, pounding it home with a 25-12 score. It was Lauren Campbell who led the effort for Saint Leo in the set, notching seven kills and three digs.
Despite the quick first set, the second set of the afternoon was a battle, yet Saint Leo finished hot with a 25-21 win. Defensively, seven Lions had at least one dig in the second set alone, with Campbell and junior libero Yaidimar Santiago collecting five apiece.
The nailbiting third set featured a come-from-behind effort as the Lions rebounded from a five-point deficit and took home the 26-24 set win, sealing the match.
Junior middle blocker Lauren Campbell led the offensive effort for the Lions in the match, collecting 16 kills and 11 defensive digs. Her junior counterpart Tawni Warren also contributed with a double-double, tallying 13 digs and 11 kills. Seniors Meghan Donovan and Jordan Sisson also took home nine kills apiece, while junior Alexa Griffith-Hardy notched seven.
In typical fashion, Santiago led the Lions' squad in digs, amassing 19 on the afternoon, while senior setter Jaclyn Mailoto tallied nine digs and 51 assists.
As a team, Saint Leo hit for .360, collecting 54 kills and 60 digs. The visiting Tars notched just 31 kills in the loss.
Saint Leo will return to action on Wednesday, October 9 when they travel to Eckerd College for their fourth Sunshine State Conference match of the year. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
