Lions Split Day 1 of the Saint Leo Classic Tournament

Lions Split Day 1 of the Saint Leo Classic Tournament

SAINT LEO, Fla. – In the first day of action at the Saint Leo Classic tournament, the Lions split a pair of matches, falling first to the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (SDSMT) Hardrockers before bouncing back to defeat the Molloy Lions in three sets.

In a heartbreaking fashion, the Lions fell to the Hardrockers after five long sets of lead-changing volleyball (25-18, 37-39, 25-20, 25-27, 18-20). The outcome of the over 2 and a half hour match was a disappointing start to the Lions' tournament, despite the individuals successes on the court. In the effort, junior Lauren Campbell notched 23 kills, while junior libero Yaidimar Santiago collected 29 digs. Key performers also included Tawni Warren (15 kills), Jillian Stolzenburg (14 kills), and Meghan Donovan (12 kills). Molly Alexander also notched 17 digs while Jaclyn Mailoto tallied 64 assists in the loss.

After the tough loss, the Lions regained their composure and took the court against the visiting Molloy Lions, whom they defeated in three quick sets (25-17, 25-9, 25-6). After a back and forth first set, Saint Leo hit a strong momentum and the home team was able to finish the match in less than one hour. Despite the timing, freshman Hope Lemon was able to collect ten kills in the effort, while  Campbell and sophomore Tayler Hegg notched seven and six kills, respectively. In typical fashion, senior setter Jaclyn Mailoto led the team in assists during the match, collecting 29 to put her season total well near 300. On the defensive side of the game, both Mailoto and Santiago tallied six digs in the win, as  Warren trailed closely behind with five.

The Saint Leo Lions will return to action tomorrow afternoon when they wrap up their Saint Leo Classic tournament with matches against Columbus State and Cedarville. The Lions' first match of the day is set for 1 p.m.
