BOCA RATON, Fla. – After a 2-2 opening weekend in Michigan, the Lions rebounded with a 4-0 performance at the Courtyard Boca Raton Invitational tournament, hosted by Lynn University. With two Friday wins under their belts, Saint Leo defeated the UPR-Mayaguez Janes by a score of 3-0 just before taking home a 3-set win over the Fort Valley State Wildcats on Saturday afternoon.
The action began for the Lions at 9 a.m., when they took the court against UPR-Mayaguez, and after just three quick sets (25-12, 25-19, 25-13), the Lions had claimed their third win of the weekend. Junior Tawni Warren and sophomore Jillian Stolzenburg led the Lions in kills during the short match, collecting eight apiece. Junior Lauren Campbell and senior Meghan Donovan led closely behind, with seven and six kills, respectively. Jaclyn Mailoto notched 23 assists in the effort, and defensively, libero Yaidimar Santiago led with seven digs.
After a short break in play, the Lions took the court for the final time during the Boca Raton Invitational; this time against the Fort Valley State Wildcats. Once again, Warren led the team in kills with 11, while Stolzenburg and junior-transfer Alexa Giffith-Hardy collected nine each. On the defensive side of the ball, newcomer Hannah Pietz notched 10 digs and Santiago took home eight. Though Mailoto has led the team thus far in assists, freshman Elizabeth Nizzoli took home 19 assists to combine with Mailoto for a total of 40 throughout the match.
The next time the Lions take the court will be in their own Saint Leo Classic Tournament on Friday, Sep. 20. In two days of action, Saint Leo will face South Dakota School of Mines, Molloy, Columbus State, and Cedarville. The Lions' first match is set for Friday at 2:00 p.m.
