ALLENDALE, Mich. – Opening up their 2013 season thousands of miles from home, the Saint Leo Lions volleyball team split two matches in the first day of the Grand Valley Laker Classic. After narrowly falling 3-2 to the No. 16 Truman State Bulldogs, the Lions rallied for a 3-0 win over tournament host Grand Valley State.
In their season opener, the Lions faced No. 16 Truman State, who took the Lions through five sets of close volleyball before taking the 3-2 win (25-20, 19-25, 19-25, 25-19, 17-15). Despite the loss, the Lions held the Bulldogs to just a .270 hitting percentage. Freshman Hope Lemon and junior-transfer Yaidimar Santiago made their debut with the green and gold in the effort, tallying 19 kills and 28 digs, respectively. Senior setter Jaclyn Mailoto contributed offensively as well, collecting 55 assists.
After the close loss, the Lions came out in full attack mode against the Grand Valley State Lakers, taking the match in a three-set sweep (25-15, 28-26, 25-23). With a team attack percentage of .380, the Lions allowed 36 kills and forced 30 attack errors. Mailoto notched 46 assists in the effort, while Lemon led the team with 14 kills and Santiago collected 11 digs. Senior middle blocker Jordan Sisson also tallied 10 kills in the win.
The Lions look to build the year's first win streak tomorrow afternoon when they take on the Adelphi University Panthers in game three of the Grand Valley Laker tournament. The contest is set to begin promptly at noon.
