WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Tampa Spartans have won at least a share of the last eight Sunshine State Conference volleyball titles, including an outright 2012 SSC Championship with a 16-0 conference record. On Wednesday, Tampa was voted as the 2013 SSC preseason favorite for the fifth consecutive season.
The Spartan picked up 64 points in a preseason poll conducted among the conference head volleyball coaches. Tampa also collected eight of the nine first-place votes.
Eckerd, who finished the 2012 campaign second in the SSC standings, was tabbed second in the preseason poll with 54 points and received the remaining first-place vote. The Tritons edged Florida Southern for the second spot. The Moccasins received 53 points to be placed third.
Following Florida Southern in the preseason poll was Rollins (40 points), Barry (37 points), Lynn (26 points) and Saint Leo (24 points). Florida Tech and Nova Southeastern both collected 13 points to tie for the eighth spot.
Tampa begins the 2013 season with a No. 2 national ranking for the second-straight season. Eckerd and Florida Southern also received votes in the AVCA national preseason poll.
