Lions Fall to Florida Southern in Conference Road Contest

LAKELAND, Fla. – The Saint Leo volleyball team could not maintain their high from the Senior Day win last weekend as the Lions dropped a 3-1 (25-22, 23-25, 25-16, 25-22) decision to host Florida Southern in Sunshine State Conference action on Tuesday evening.

Offensive numbers were hard to come by for the Lions, as they only hit .179 compared to the Mocs' .284 average as the game was also not played perfectly with both teams combining for 37 attack errors and 20 service errors.

The Lions (11-16, 3-12 SSC) still managed to post an impressive final-set where, despite the final tally, they significantly outplayed their opponents with a .300 to .194 advantage in hitting percentage.  It was a five-point swing in the middle of the set that prevented the Lions from pushing the match to a fifth set.

Florida Southern (20-11, 10-5 SSC) was led by Ali Skayhan who recorded 11 kills, 36 assists and 14 digs and hit .556. Anne Pietkiewicz also led with 12 kills and added 10 digs.

In the loss, Saint Leo was paced by 14 kills from Sami Vierk and 10 kills from Tawni Warren. Molly Alexander paced the Lions defense with 22 digs as they outdug the Mocs for the match, 61-56.

The Lions will close out the 2012 season when they travel to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. to face Nova Southeastern on Friday night. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
