Saint Leo Drops Four-Set  Match to Rollins

SAINT LEO, Fla—The Saint Leo University women's volleyball team (10-15, 2-11 SSC) fell to the Rollins College Tars (15-13, 6-6 SSC) on Friday night at the Marion Bowman Activities Center by a score of 3-1 (25-20, 23-25, 25-21, 29-27).

The Lions opened up the first set with a 5-2 lead, but the Tars quickly snatched the momentum and rattled off 11 of the next 15 points to take a 13-9 lead. The game then turned into a back and forth matchup with the Lions cutting the Tars' lead to 21-19. Rollins scored four out of the next five points to take the first set by a score of 25-20.

In the second set, the Lions once again started off hot, taking six of the first eight points on route to an 8-3 lead. Near the midway point of the set, Rollins tallied three straight points to cut the Saint Leo lead to 14-12, but the Lions provided an answer right back, scoring the next three straight to take a 17-12 lead and keep the Tars an arm's length away.

Rollins found a spark though, and rallied to win seven of the next eight points to take their first lead of the second set. After trailing 21-20 the Lions won the race to 25 and tied the match at one set a piece after Meghan Donovan's fifth kill of the set. Jacklyn Mailoto led the set with eight assists.  

The Lions started the third set in a very similar fashion to the first two sets, jumping out to an 8-7 lead. A span in the middle of the set where the Tars scored eight of 10 points allowed them to gain a 20-17 lead on the Lions. The Tars then scored the final five points of the set to claim a 25-21 win and take a 2-1 set lead in the match.

In the fourth and eventual decisive set, the Tars jumped out to a lead 4-3 lead to start the set but the Lions scored  the next 11 of 15 points to take a comfortable 14-8 lead. The Tars continued to put pressure on the Lions, as they scored six of eight points over one span to cut the Lions' lead to 21-20. A thrilling last few minutes of the game saw the Tars win six of eight points at one point, and four of the last five to win the set 29-27.

Sami Vierk led the Lions with 17 kills. Jaclyn Mailoto accumulated 37 assists in the match.

The Saint Leo volleyball team gets right back into action tomorrow when they host the Florida Tech Panthers at 4:00 p.m. on Senior Night.
