SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo volleyball team dropped their first Sunshine State Conference match of the season on Friday evening as they fell to the Barry Buccaneers 3-1 (19-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-23) at the Marion Bowman Activities Center. With the setback the Lions fall to 6-3 overall and are now 0-1 in SSC play.
After a back-and-forth second set, the Buccaneers (6-3, 1-0 SSC) stole the momentum and came out on top with 15 kills and a .228 hitting percentage.
The third set was quite a battle. Despite overcoming a 7-2 deficit, and notching more kills than their opponents, the Lions fell short as the Buccaneers held on to the five-point victory.
The fourth set mimicked the third, with the Lions in a 7-3 hole, but they quickly battled back within two. Rallying back to tie the set at 18, the Buccaneers did not take their foot off the pedal with key kills late in the match to pull out the win.
In a heartbreaking loss for the Lions, Jaclyn Mailoto amassed 46 assists along with 11 digs. Other standout Lions included Sami Vierk who totaled 17 kills and Meghan Donovan who knocked down 12 attacks on just two errors.
Tania Torres and Ashley Carrero combined 27 kills for the Buccaneers. Torres finished with 15 and Carrero posted 12 leading the team to a .303 hitting percentage.
Despite the loss, the Lions will have less than 24 hours before hosting another SSC contest, this time with Lynn University on Saturday. The match is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. in the Marion Bowman Activities Center.
