SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo volleyball team put a bit of a Halloween scare into the visiting No. 1 Tampa Spartans, but the visitors recovered enough to sneak away from the Marion Bowman Activities Center with a 3-1 (25-17, 25-20, 14-25, 26-24) win in SSC action on Saturday afternoon.
With the Spartans trying to recover from a loss to Eckerd last night, the day looked to be dominated by Tampa (25-1, 12-1 SSC) after the first two sets. Saint Leo (12-12, 4-6 SSC) had a different idea in the third set when they dominated their opponents. Claiming the 25-14 win, the Lions hit a blistering .440 and held UT to just .100 on the attack.
In set four the Lions posted as much as an 8-3 advantage before the visitors responded to take a 23-20 lead. One last rally knotted the game at 24 and forced Tampa into a timeout, but the Spartans would claim the last two points to secure the match.
Eva Dupay, Jessica Yingling and Danielle Selkridge led the Spartan charge, totaling 28 kills. Selkridge posted five blocks at the net while Dupay amassed four.
The Lions will now turn their attention to a road contest with Eckerd College as the Lions will travel to St. Petersburg on Tuesday night. The match is set to get underway at 7 p.m. For the latest news, updates, and information on Lions Volleyball, visit SaintLeoLions.com.
