PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Saint Leo volleyball team took care of business on Saturday as they snapped a recent skid with solid wins over Valdosta State and Alabama-Huntsville on the final day of the GSC/SSC Crossover Tournament. The Lions dropped only one set the entire day, pulling back to even in the win column, and now sit at 10-10 on the season.
Opening the final day with a 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 25-18, 25-21) win over Valdosta State (12-11), the Lions were led by double-digit performances from senior Emily Calderon-Reyes and freshman Lauren Campbell. Reyes notched 11 kills and 15 digs in posting her sixth double-double of 2011. Campbell added 10 kills in the win, and another Saint Leo freshman, Tawni Warren, added nine kills and hit .421 to add to the Lions' young threat.
The Saint Leo defense was very evident in game one as they out-blocked their opponents 13-to-4 and held the Blazers to a lowly 0.83 attack average.
Finishing the bookend wins with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-15, 25-22) triumph over Alabama-Huntsville, Saint Leo saw an even performance from every starter as four Lions notched six kills or more in the straight-sets sweep. Warren again took home the hitting percentage award, averaging .429 behind seven kills and just one error. Reyes added 8 kills and a .389 average to the effort.
The Lions return to the friendly confines of the Bowman Center for the first time in 12 days when they square off against Nova Southeastern on Tuesday night. The Lions and Sharks are scheduled to get their Sunshine State Conference match underway at 7:00 p.m. For the latest news, updates, and information on the Lions, visit SaintLeoLions.com.
