SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo volleyball team flexed their muscles on Saturday as the Lions soundly defeated St. Edward's University 3-1 (25-22, 21-25, 25-18, 25-21) and the University of New Haven 3-0 (25-19, 25-12, 25-20) in the final day of the 2011 Saint Leo Lion Classic at the Marion Bowman Activities Center.
It was a day where nearly every Lion saw court time with 12 Saint Leo players taking the court in the morning win over St. Edward's (1-1); and nearly the entire roster, 14 student-athletes, registering time in the triumph over New Haven (0-2).
The two wins also featured Saint Leo (3-1) starters posting some very impressive numbers with senior Emily Calderon-Reyes racking up 23 kills against St. Edward's, while sophomore Jaclyn Mailoto chipped in 37 assists. Mailoto would later add 18 helpers to her total in the New Haven game.
The tandem of sophomore Megan Donovan and senior Danielle Bletso combined for 14.5 blocks between both games as the Lions held their opponents to a 0.114 attack average across seven sets. Sophomore libero Molly Alexander added 24 digs against St. Edward's while freshman Nikki Doehrmann was also impressive in the back row with 11 scoops.
In amassing those 23 kills Calderon-Reyes took 43 swings, and only missed her mark three times, leading to an impressive .465 average.
After a grueling 36-hour stretch with four matches, the Lions will take time to rest and recuperate before preparing for the North Alabama Tournament this upcoming weekend. The Lions will face Christian Brothers University, the University of North Alabama and Queens University of Charlotte in Florence, Ala. next Friday and Saturday.
