Women's tennis takes down Eckerd, 8-1

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's tennis team had to wait a day to play their season opener, but it was worth it as the Lions took down Eckerd, 8-1, at Saint Leo Tennis Center in their first game of the season.

The Lions, who rank No. 4 in the nation, opened with a 3-0 lead following the doubles matches.

The doubles pair at No. 3 was the highlight of the afternoon as the Lions saw senior Katherine Zaatini pair up with Megan Charlton, a junior goalkeeper from the Saint Leo women's soccer team. Charlton joined the Lions and paired with Zaatini to earn an 8-6 win.

Marine Beugre-Guyot and Maja Pindelska took an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles, while Fabiola Cardenas and Madeleine Gauthier won the No. 2 flight at 8-2 as well.

In singles, Marine Beugre-Guyot swept Emily Fridrik, 6-0, 6-0, to claim the No. 1 flight of singles. Gauthier claimed a strong 6-1, 6-0 win over Bailey Koronich at No. 4 singles.

Zaatini added a 6-1, 6-1 win over Laurence Bourgault at No. 5 flight.

Cardenas took down MaryAnn Aaron 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3, while Pindelska added a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles.

Madeline Carlson topped Charlton, 6-1, 6-0, at the No. 6 spot to earn Eckerd's one point.

The Lions return to action on Saturday, Feb. 18 with at 10 a.m. match versus No. 15 Nova Southeastern at Saint Leo Tennis Center.
