SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's tennis team was picked in third place in the 2017 Sunshine State Conference women's tennis preseason poll, as voted by the league coaches, that was announced on Wednesday afternoon.
"Taking into consideration the seniors we lost, I think the coaches were looking at the youth of our team and not knowing who our players will be, while Barry and Lynn are returning most of their key players, I think this spot makes sense," said head coach Chad Berryhill. "I think this is a good position for us, it's less pressure for our team, and it gives us motivation and something to work for."
The Lions trail Lynn, who was picked No. 1, and Barry, who was picked No. 2.
Saint Leo finished 2016 with an overall record 23-3 and an undefeated SSC record at 8-0. They drew the No. 1 seed to the 2016 NCAA South Regional Tournament after winning the SSC regular season championship. Following the regional championship, the Lions took 5-1 victories from Ulndy and Southwest Baptist but fell short in the NCAA Semifinals against top-seeded BYU-Hawaii.
The Lions are currently No. 4 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Preseason poll, falling behind Lynn, No. 3, while Barry falls in at No. 6 in the nation.
Saint Leo opens up the 2017 season on Wednesday, Feb. 15 with a home SSC match versus Florida Tech.
