Lions Conclude Conference Play with 5-3 SSC Record
SAINT LEO, Fla. – With the Sunshine State Conference Championship Tournament looming on the horizon, the seventh-ranked Saint Leo women's tennis team sank the No. 8 Rollins College Tars by a final score of 6-3 on Wednesday afternoon at the Saint Leo Tennis Center. The win advances the Lions to a record of 16-4, and 5-2 in SSC action, while the Tars drop their third straight and fall to a record of 13-5, and 2-3 in SSC play.
The Lions found themselves up 2-1 after doubles action, with the tandem of Maria Benkirane and Adrianna Daszkiewicz defeating Mariana Salvador and Johanna Olsson 8-2 in the No. 3 flight. Laura Kemkes and Pauline Helgesson finished next, taking down Taylor Brown and Shannon Etten, 8-6 at the No. 2 spot.
Saint Leo took to singles play and won four of the six slots to earn its 16th win of the season. No. 17 DeCampli took down Coralie Pesenti, 6-3, 6-0 at the top seed, while Rosenberg defeated 47th-ranked Wagner, at No. 2 singles after a hard fought 7-6 (5-7), 6-2, 10-5 battle.
Kemkes earned an easy 6-1, 6-1 win over Etten at the No. 3 position, while Benkirane defeated Brown 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 4 seed. Montoya took down Ashley Loft, 6-4, 6-3, at the fifth position, while Daszkiewicz defeated Wookey, 6-0, 6-2 at the sixth slot.
The Saint Leo women's tennis team wraps up its 2014 regular season campaign on Saturday, April 12, when they host Palm Beach Atlantic at home. Match time against the Sailfish is slated to begin at 2 p.m. at the Saint Leo Tennis Center.
