No. 8 Saint Leo Makes Easy Work of Millersville, 6-3
Lions Wrap Up Spring Break Going 4-0 on the Week
HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Despite defaulting in three flights due to a smaller roster than normal, the eighth-ranked Saint Leo women's tennis team made easy work of Millersville University on Friday morning to conclude their spring break trip in Hilton Head, S.C. The win gives the Lions a perfect 4-0 performance on the week, and extends the team's win streak to 10 as they advance their record to 12-3 on the season.
The Lions did not surrender a point in the matches they participated in, sweeping Millersville in No. 1 and 2 doubles, as well as the in the first through fourth singles flights.
Saint Leo won the top-flight doubles match as Laura Kemkes and Pauline Helgesson downed Tori Davis and Elizabeth Wagner, 8-0. Maria Benkirane and Coralie Pesenti won at No. 2 for the Lions, beating Aleandra Heller and Stefanie Fisher 8-0. Kaylora Thompson and Nicole Daacke earned the win at No. 3 as the Lions defaulted to the Marauders and did not play.
With a one-point lead, Saint Leo established the win with a sweep of four singles slots, defaulting the final two slots to Millersville.
In the top-seeded match, Pesenti defated Wagner 6-0, 6-0, while Kemkes picked up a 6-0, 6-0 shutout over Heller in the No. 2 match. Benkirane earned a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3, while Helgesson wrapped up the morning with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Daacke at No. 4.
Millersville's Thompson and Maggie Karr earned wins at the No. 5 and 6 slots as Saint Leo did not play.
The Saint Leo women's tennis team returns to action on Wednesday, March 26, when they travel to Daytona, Fla. to take on Embry-Riddle.
