No. 8 Saint Leo Edges No. 28 Erskine, 5-4

Lions Open Up Spring Break Trip in Hilton Head on High Note

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The eighth-ranked Saint Leo women's tennis team opened their spring break trip to Hilton Head, S.C. on a high note, edging the 28th-ranked Erksine College Flying Fleet by a score of 5-4 on Wednesday morning.

The Lions found themselves down 1-0 to begin the morning, defaulting to Erskine at the No. 3 position, followed by the No. 2 Erskine tandem of Miranda Guthrie and Sarah McDonald defeating Maria Benkirane and Adrianna Daszkiewicz, 8-5 at No. 2 doubles.

The Lions picked up a win at the No. 1 slot as the duo of Laura Kemkes and Pauline Helgesson took down Corin Hallman and Mika Goyette, 8-5.

The Lions defaulted at No. 6 singles, giving Erskine a 3-1 lead heading into singles play, but Daszkiewicz pulled the Lions to within one, 3-2, with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Haley Elliott at No. 5 singles.

Kemkes pulled Saint Leo even with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Miranda Guthrie at the No. 2 slot, but a win by Hallman at No. 1 singles over Coralie Pesenti, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 to give the Flying Fleet the 4-3 advantage.

Saint Leo closed out the morning with two straight wins, beginning with Benkirane defeating Goyette 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3, followed by Helgesson clinching the win with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 win over McDonald at No. 4 singles.

The Saint Leo women's tennis team returns to action on Thursday, March 20, when they take on both Bloomsburg University and Slippery Rock on day two of their spring break trip.
