Lions Sweep Doubles Play, Hand St. Mary's First Loss of the Season
SAINT LEO, Fla. – the Eighth-ranked Saint Leo women's tennis team handed the No. 21 Rattlers a 6-3 win over No. 21 St. Mary's on Wednesday afternoon at the Saint Leo Tennis Center.
The win gives the Lions an overall mark of 7-4 on the season, while St. Mary's drops to a record of 9-1.
Saint Leo swept doubles action en route to handing St. Mary's its first loss of 2014. Laura Kemkes and Pauline Helgesson defeated Mariana Rong and Cristina Lopez, 8-2 at No. 1 singles, before Maria Benkirane and Adrianna Daszkiewicz defeated Felicity Delgado and Mamie Lee Denton, 8-2 at the No. 2 slot.
In singles play, Kemkes earned a 6-0, 6-1 win over No. 18 Rong in the top flight, followed by Benkirane defeating Lopez 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.
Helgesson retired at No. 3 singles, defaulting the win to Delgado, while Daszkiewicz dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision to Denton at the No 4 position. But a hard fought win at No. 5 singles by Montoya helped the Lions seal the deal as she defeated Ariana Saldana 7-6 (7-4), 6-0.
The Lions conceded No. 6 singles by default, giving Bryant the win.
The Saint Leo women's tennis team returns to action on Saturday, March 15, when they take on NYIT at home. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
