SAINT LEO, Fla. – The eighth-ranked Saint Leo women's tennis team was unable to topple No. 3 Barry University on Friday evening at the Saint Leo Tennis Complex, falling to the Buccaneers by a score of 7-2. The loss drops the Lions to 2-2, and 1-2 in SSC action, while the Bucs advance to a perfect 6-0, and 5-0 in SSC play.
The Lions picked up a victory at No. 3 doubles as the duo of Maria Benkirane and Adriana Daskiewicz defeated the Barry tandem of Karina Goia and Isabela Miro, 9-8 (7-5).
At the No. 1 doubles slot, the Saint Leo combo of Anastasia Wagner and Paula Montoya gave the top-ranked tandem of Emma Onila and Linda Fritschken a run for their money, but fell by a tally of 9-8 (9-7).
The Lions then dropped to the Bucs at No. 2 doubles, as Laura Kemkes and Pauline Helgesson fell to Anaeve Pain and Kimmy Twelker, 8-6, to close out doubles competition with Barry holding onto a 2-1 lead.
Saint Leo fell at No. 1 singles as eighth-ranked Onila took down Coralie Pesenti, 6-3, 6-1. Wagner took her opponent, No. 31 Fritschken, to three sets, but eventually surrendered at No. 2 singles, 0-6, 6-3, 6-0.
Kemkes put up a fight at No. 3 singles, taking No. 19 Goia to three sets, including a tiebreaker. Kemkes took the first set, 4-6, but found herself at the bottom half of a long fight in the second set, 7-6 (7-0). A battle ensued in the third, but Kemkes yielded by a final tally of 11-9.
While the battle ensued at No. 3 singles, a similar fight was raging at the No. 4 spot. Pain took the first set, 6-1, but Benkirane fought back to win the second, 5-7, before Pain took the final set, 10-5.
At the No. 5 slot, ninth-ranked Elisabeth Abanda took down Montoya (6-1, 6-3), but Helgesson earned a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 victory over Blanka Szavay at the No. 6 position to pick up the Lions' second win of the evening.
The Saint Leo women's tennis team returns to action on Saturday, February 22, when they host Armstrong Atlantic at the Saint Leo Tennis Complex. Match time against the Pirates is slated for 10 a.m.
