Eighth-Ranked Women’s Tennis Earns 7-2 Conference Victory over No. 21 Sharks

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The eighth-ranked Saint Leo University women's tennis team opened up Sunshine State Conference play on a high note, making easy work of the 21-ranked Nova Southeastern Sharks on Sunday afternoon at the NSU Tennis Complex.  The Lions defeated the Sharks by a score of 7-2, and advanced their record to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in SSC play, while the Sharks drop to 1-2, and 1-1 in conference action.

Doubles competition saw the Lions earn wins in the first and second slots.  Laura Kemkes and Pauline Helgesson defeated Sabrina Kierberg and Iryna Serdyuk in the top spot by a score of 8-1, while the second flight duo of Maria Benkirane and Anastasia Wagner took down Alex Johansson and Charlotte Cote, 8-6.

Nova Southeastern earned the win at No. 3 doubles as Juliet Serabian and Linda Kornienko picked up an 8-5 advantage over Paula Montoya and Coralie Pesenti to end doubles action with Saint Leo in a slim 2-1 lead.

Saint Leo rolled through singles play, taking five of the six flights to pull out the win on the afternoon.  Wagner took home the win at No. 1 singles, defeating Johansson by a score of 6-2, 6-3.  Meanwhile, Kemkes made easy work of her opponent Carlee Rizzolo (6-0, 6-0) in the third flight.

Montoya took down Cote by a score of 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 4 slot, while Helgesson earned a key 6-2, 7-5 victory over Serabian at No. 5 singles.  Adrianna Daszkiewicz earned the Lions' final win of the afternoon as she defeated Kornienko by a final tally of 6-2, 6-0.

Benkirane surrendered the final match of the day, but not after a fight as she fell to Kierberg by a tally of 2-6, 6-4, 10-6 at the No. 2 slot.

The Saint Leo women's tennis team returns to action on Wednesday, February 12, when they host Florida Southern at home.  Match time is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m. at the Saint Leo Tennis Complex.
