SAINT LEO, Fla. - The eighth-ranked Saint Leo women's tennis team opened their 2014 campaign on a high note, defeating the College of Coastal Georgia Mariners by a score of 8-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Saint Leo Tennis Complex. The Lions open their slate with a mark of 1-0, while Coastal Georgia drops to 0-1 on its young season.
The Green and Gold got the afternoon started right with a sweep of doubles. The tandem of Pauline Helgesson and Laura Kemkes made quick work of Priti Rijal and Nicole Faas with a score of 8-0. Maria Benkirane and Anastasia Wagner followed with an 8-1 victory over Elektra Hunter and Kristina Polakovic, while Paula Montoya and Adrianna Daszkiewicz defeated Sunshine Beba and Luisa Lopes in the No. 3 doubles slot by a finally tally of 8-2.
In singles action, Benkirane squared off against Hunter in the No. 1 slot, making easy work of her opponent as she secured two quick 6-0, 6-0 victories. Wagner took charge in the No. 2 singles spot, earning a 7-5, 6-0 win over Beba.
At No. 3 singles, Kemkes earned a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Faas, while Helgesson took down Rijal by a tally of 6-0. 6-1 in the No. 4 slot.
Montoya earned the Lions' final victory of the afternoon, defeating Polakovic by a 6-1, 6-1 final at No. 5 singles. Lopes was able to secure the Mariners' lone victory of the afternoon thanks to a forfeit by Daszkiewicz in the No. 6 slot.
The Lions return to action on Sunday, February 9, when they travel down to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. to take on Nova Southeastern University. Match time against the Sharks is set for 1:00 p.m.
