Saint Leo Ranked Eighth in Final ITA National Poll

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's tennis team finished the 2013 season ranked eighth in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association's rankings released earlier this week.  The program-best eighth place finish is just a single spot shy of its highest spot of seventh that they held for most of the season.

The Lions were also recognized in the ITA South Region rankings as Saint Leo finished third behind only Barry and West Florida.

Earning impressive final rankings were the Saint Leo doubles tandem of Pauline Helgesson and Maria Benkirane in the No. 20 spot nationally.  The duo went 17-7 overall and 5-2 in the tough Sunshine State Conference.  Playing primarily out of the top doubles spot, Helgesson and Benkirane went 10-5 while also posting a 7-2 record at the No. 2 spot.  The duo also finished fifth in the South Region.

Also racking up South Region honors was Helgesson and fellow freshman Coralie Pesenti.  Both freshmen played as experienced veterans despite playing in just their first season in the Green and Gold.

The doubles duo of Laura Kemkes and Emily Singleton finished the season ranked tied for 10th as they teamed up to post a 9-5 injury-shortened overall record.

After wrapping up another successful campaign, Head Coach James Bryce and the Lions hosted the NCAA South Region Tournament, advancing to the championship match before falling to West Florida.  The Lions went 18-5 on the season, finishing second in the conference while continuing to further the notoriety of the Saint Leo Women's Tennis program.
