SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo sophomore tennis standout Maria Benkirane has been named to the 2012-13 Capital One Academic All-District Women's At-Large First Team, announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Friday morning.
This marks the first time in only her second season in the Green and Gold that Benkirane has earned First Team All-District honors.
In her second year in the Green and Gold, Benkirane earned all-conference honors behind a dominating performance, going 18-3 overall while she also went 7-1 in the conference. Excelling in her sophomore season, the Casablanca, Morocco native played the majority of her 2013 season at No. 4 singles where she totaled an overall record of 9-2 while at the No. 3 spot she went 8-1. As with her fellow all SSC teammate Daszkiewicz, she was versatile at all flights, compiling a 1-0 record at No. 2 singles.
The Saint Leo doubles tandem of Benkirane and Pauline Helgesson earned the No. 20 spot in the ITA rankings to help further solidify the Lions' sophomore within the team. The duo went 17-7 overall and 5-2 in the tough Sunshine State Conference. Playing primarily out of the top doubles spot, Helgesson and Benkirane went 10-5 while also posting a 7-2 record at the No. 2 spot.
The prestigious award honors the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Capital One has been the entitlement rights holder to CoSIDA's Academic All-America teams programs since 2011.
First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
