No. 7 Lions Earn Conference Win over No. 21 Sharks
SAINT LEO, Fla. – Playing less than 24 hours after pulling out a conference road thriller, the seventh-ranked Saint Leo women's tennis team managed to rack up another win as the Lions defeated the 21st-ranked Nova Southeastern Sharks, 5-4 in Sunshine State Conference action on Saturday afternoon.
"The girls got the job done today," Head Coach James Bryce said. "To play less than 24 hours after a five hours match shows their toughness. We have some things to work on before Pensacola, but we are looking forward to the challenge."
Today's match had a similar flow to yesterday's match against Rollins as the Lions (14-2, 6-1 SSC) relied on a 2-1 advantage gained in doubles action to help propel them to the win. Although tripped up at No. 2 doubles, the tandems of Pauline Helgesson and Maria Benkirane at No. 1 and Coralie Pesenti and Adrianna Daszkiewicz at No. 3 again pulled out victories to give Saint Leo the advantage.
Moving to singles play, Nova Southeastern (6-10, 2-5 SSC) swept through the first two flights and, accompanied with a win at the No. 6 spot managed to tie the match. Again coming down to the No. 3 singles spot and Daszkiewicz, the junior again came up clutch as she breezed past her opponent behind 6-4, 6-1 wins.
The Lions now prepare for one of the toughest stretches to open the final month of the regular season. Saint Leo travels to Pensacola for three matches with teams from the Gulf South Conference. The first match is against No. 3 West Florida on Friday, April 5 at noon.
