No.15 Saint Leo Falls to No.4 Lynn, 5-1, in Semifinals of SSC Tournament
LAKELAND, Fla. – The No.15-ranked Saint Leo women's tennis team (17-6) dropped a 5-1 decision to the No.4-ranked Lynn University Fighting Knights (18-3), Saturday morning at the Florida Blue Sunshine State Conference Women's Tennis Tournament. The semifinal loss drops Saint Leo to the back draw where they are scheduled to take on Rollins College later Saturday afternoon. Tentative start time is 3 p.m.
Resuming suspended doubles play from Friday, the Lions and Fighting Knights split the opening two matches. Lynn's top pair of Ioana Ivan and Sabine Krause, ranked No.3 in the country, nipped the Lions' tandem of Laura Kemkes and Emily Singleton. Saint Leo quickly tied the match, however, as Adrianna Daszkiewicz and Jeanette McDonald rolled Ana Kriz and Roxane Alexandru, 8-2.
With advantage coming hinging on the third set, the Fighting Knights managed to squeak past the Lions' duo of Maria Benkirane and Selma Hidass in a thrilling tie break finish, 9-8 (7-4). Saint Leo held a 7-6 advantage in the match, but it was Lynn who fought back and won in tiebreaker fashion.
Saint Leo attempted to make a comeback, but Lynn secured three points at two, four, and six singles to secure the win. For the Lions, Kemkes and Benkirane secured first set wins, 6-2 and 6-1, but their matches were left unfinished.
Falling to the back draw, Saint Leo will now challenge Rollins for third place in the SSC. Doubles is set to begin tentatively at 3 p.m.
