No. 17 Saint Leo Makes Easy Work of West Virginia State, 8-1
SAINT LEO, Fla. – The 17th-ranked Saint Leo women's tennis team made easy work of their opponent and extended their win streak to three straight, swatting the West Virginia State Yellow Jackets 8-1 on Wednesday afternoon from the Saint Leo Tennis Center.
The Lions advance their record to 12-4 on the season, while the Yellow Jackets drop their second consecutive match and fall to a mark of 12-5.
Earning two of three doubles matches, the Lions went on to sweep West Virginia State in singles play to secure the win.
The third flight tandem of Maria Benkirane and Samantha White took an easy 8-0 victory over Jana Jones and Clara McAdam, followed by the No. 1 and eighth-ranked duo of Laura Kemkes and Emily Singleton with an 8-0 sweep over Brittany Craig and Ana Juarez.
Despite the slip in doubles, McDonald bounced back to wrap up singles play first, sweeping Kerns 6-0, 6-0 to put the Lions ahead 3-1. No. 5 Benkirane followed suite with another 6-0, 6-0 finish, taking down WVSU's Kerns to give Saint Leo a 4-1 advantage.
No. 6 Caroline Ebner finished third in singles action, taking down Jones 6-0, 6-1. Daskiewicz took the first set over Juarez with ease and surrendered three points in the second to take home a 6-0, 6-3 win.
Singleton and Kemkes finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Singleton walked away with two 6-2 sets for the win, securing the Lions' seventh win of the day. Kemkes battled through a first set struggle, earning 7-6(5) win in the first set, but went on to trounce opponent Craig in the second set 6-1 to conclude the afternoon.
"Overall we played well as a team today," said Head Coach James Bryce. "Jeanette and Ada responded well after a tough doubles match, and we're impressed with how they recovered. We're excited about the next few weeks."
