No.17 Lions Ground Division I Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks, 7-2
SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's tennis team (7-2) ran its consecutive win streak run to four matches as the Lions upended the University of Tennessee-Martin, 7-2, Wednesday afternoon from the Saint Leo Tennis Center.
In taking down their Division I foes, the Lions took two-of-three matches on the doubles side, before registering five singles victories.
Tennessee-Martin, who was predicted to win the Ohio Valley Conference in 2012, faced a rather difficult Lions' group who immediately staked their claim to the match by winning two of the three doubles contests. The Lions top-flight and nationally-ranked duo of Laura Kemkes and Emily Singleton highlighted the Lions' advantage with an 8-4 win over Tiley/Simik.
Saint Leo controlled the match the rest of the way as they posted wins at all but No.1 singles. Maria Benkirane bounced her challenger in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, while Adrianna Daszkiewicz and Emily Singleton went 6-2, 6-2, and 6-3, 6-1, respectively. Jeanette McDonald closed the match with a hard-fought win at No.4 singles and Caroline Ebner gutted-out a grueling three-setter.
The Lions will return to action on Friday, March 7, when they host No.7-ranked Columbus State. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
