SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's tennis team (1-0) earned its first win of the 2012 season as they defeated region foe Palm Beach Atlantic (1-1), 6-3, in its regular season home opener, Saturday afternoon from the Saint Leo Tennis Center.
Battling a pesky Sailfish group, the Lions registered two wins on the doubles side, before edging Palm Beach in 4-of-6 singles contests.
After dropping a match at No.2 doubles, the Lions rebounded nicely as the No.3 tandem of Jeanette McDonald and Adrianna Daszkiewicz bounced Wharton and Antista, 8-3. The Lions collected their second point of the afternoon behind the efforts of a come-from-behind victory at No.1 doubles. Facing a 7-3 deficit, Laura Kemkes and Emily Singleton battled back to upend their Palm Beach opponents, 9-7.
The team carried the doubles momentum into singles action as they registered four wins to solidify the match. Kemkes collected the most dominant of the four wins at No.1 singles as she went 6-1, 6-0, over Vasquez. Meanwhile, Caroline Ebner also performed well as she earned a 6-2, 6-2 win over Antista at the No.6 spot.
On the women's performance, Head Coach James Bryce stated, "We had to dig deep and fight hard today. Our No.1 doubles was down big today, before fighting their way back into the match and eventually claiming the win. PBA is a much improved squad, and it was a good test for us out of the gate."
The Lions will return to action on Wednesday, February 8, when they travel to Tampa to take on the University of Tampa in a non-conference showdown. First serve is set for 3 p.m.
