Men Surge to No.21; Women Ranked No.31
SAINT LEO, Fla. – Both the Saint Leo men's and women's tennis teams concluded their 2011 regular season ranked in the top-50 of the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Top-50 poll, it was announced Friday. The men catapulted six spots to finish No.21 while the women slipped four spots falling to No.31.
On the men's side, the Green & Gold finished ranked ahead of conference nemesis Florida Southern as they fell back to No. 24. Saint Leo finished the season with a mark of 14-11, the most wins since 1988.
Topping the Mocs in the SSC Tournament quarterfinals, and earning their first-ever berth in the NCAA Tournament, the Lions now sport a pair of singles competitors in the top-60.
Victor Lozier, who was named SSC Freshman of the Year last week, is ranked No.42 in the latest poll as he has compiled a record of 18-5 in 2011.
Teammate and fellow freshman, Matt Nicholson-Lewis, cracks the list at No.59. Being named to the All-SSC Second Team last week as a singles challenger, Nicholson-Lewis has amassed 11 victories playing out of the top flight spot.
In addition, the duo teamed on the doubles side where, competing out of the No.1 spot, posted their highest national ranking to date, No.17. The tandem finished with a 16-9 overall mark.
As for the women, the team, ranked as high as No.24 this season, fell four spots to No.31. Still, the group posted the most wins by any women's team since at least 1980 (15).
The women also their first All-SSC selection since 2008, as Laura Kemkes was named to the Honorable Mention Team.
