SAINT LEO, Fla. – Shaena Keefe and Gina Schifano walked out onto the Saint Leo Tennis Center Court hoping to upset one of the top teams in the country on senior day. Unfortunately, the final score did not fall on the Lions side as they dropped a 9-0 decision to No. 9 Rollins College (14-6, 4-3 SSC), Wednesday afternoon.
Saint Leo (6-13, 1-6 SSC), while being upended 3-0 in doubles action, demonstrated the ability to compete against elite competition. The same can be said for singles play as the Lions pushed multiple Rollins’ opponents to the brink.
The Lions best shot at victory in doubles came at the No. 1 spot when the team of Keefe and Jeanette McDonald exchanged point with their challengers during the first part of the set. Still the Ragsdale and Loft duo proved to be too much in the long run, upending the Lions’ pair, 8-4.
On the singles side, it was McDonald and Schifano that carried much of the load. Going up against the 15th-ranked player in the country, McDonald posted two points in the first set and battled through the second set to post four points. Still, Fleming was able to stagger by McDonald to complete the set sweep, 6-2, 6-4.
Schifano made her opponent, Tatja, work for every tally. The senior went point-for-point with the Rollins’ challenger in both sets but came up just short each time, falling 6-3, 6-3.
The Lions still have one more conference tilt left on their 2010 campaign, as they travel to St. Petersburg, Fla. to take on the Eckerd Tritons on Friday, April 9. First serve is set for 3:00 p.m.
