SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women’s tennis team (4-7) took down Lake Superior University (8-13) 6-3, Friday evening from the Saint Leo Tennis Center in non-conference action.
Saint Leo took to court riding high on a two-match winning streak, and that momentum carried over to doubles action of the Lions-Lakers’ match-up, claiming two-of-three games.
Shaena Keefe and Jeanette McDonald wrestled away a thrilling, 9-8 (11-9) win over DiVito and Pumford at No. 1 doubles. That win was followed by Caroline Ebner and Tamara Bustard’s dominating 8-1 win over Wiethoff and Kristola at No. 3 doubles.
With a 2-1 advantage, the Lions entered singles play with all the momentum. The squad continued to put pressure on the Lakers as McDonald and Keefe raced through their opponents 6-2, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-0, respectively.
Gina Schifano put the finishing touches on the Lions fourth win, as she put down her opponent in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. Tamara Bustard iced the match with a shutout win at No. 6 singles.
The Lions look to continue their hot play on Sunday, March 7 when Michigan Tech visits the SLU Tennis Center. First serve is set for noon.
