SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women’s tennis (3-7) pushed their winning streak to two matches, as they defeated the Eckerd College Tritons (0-3) 7-2, in non-conference action from the Saint Leo Tennis Center Thursday evening.
In the contest, the Lions swept through doubles play and ended action by taking four of six singles matches.
During the doubles portion of the event, each of the Lions pair’s played in back-and-forth matches with SLU enduring each time to come away with a 3-0 advantage. The Lions No. 1 tandem of Shaena Keefe and Jeanette McDonald were triumphant in their match, upending the team of Emmy Laing and Stephanie Jenks, 8-6.
It was a similar score at No. 2 doubles as the Saint Leo pair of Gina Schifano and Christine Clyne turned back Ironside and Teets, 8-6. It was another close battle at No. 3 doubles, but Saint Leo remained in the win column as the tandem of Caroline Ebner and Tamara Bustard made quick work of Hammerschim and Ludwig, 8-4.
With a 3-0 advantage, Saint Leo took to singles action. After McDonald won a, three-set super tie breaker decision at No. 1 singles, Keefe made quick work of her opponent at No. 2 singles, sweeping Jenks 6-2, 6-0.
A loss at No. 3 singles didn’t derail the Lions’ plans, however, as the Lions sealed the deal at No. 4 singles with Schifano’s straight-set win over Ironside, 6-1, 6-0.
Bustard tallied the Lions seventh and final point with an 8-7, 6-0 win over Buelow at No. 6 singles.
The Lions turnaround is quick as Lake Superior State University makes a visit to the Saint Leo Tennis Center on Friday, March 5. The non-conference showdown is set for 3:00 pm
