SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women’s tennis team (1-7, 0-2 SSC) fell to the No.9-ranked Barry University Buccaneers 8-1, Saturday afternoon from the Saint Leo Tennis Center.

In total, the Lions secured one win at the No. 5 singles slot, and totaled two points in two of the remaining eight matches.

In doubles play, the Lions faced an immediate deficit as they surrendered the No. 3 spot on a withdrawal. The No. 2 tandem of Christine Clyne and Tamara Bustard scored one point, while the No. 1 pair of Shaena Keefe and Gina Schifano was blanked.

Down 3-0, singles play did not lend the helping hand the Lions were looking for as they dropped in 5-of-6 matches. Keefe fell in straight sets at No. 1, while Schifano struggled at the No. 2 position dropping her sets, 6-2, 6-1.

The combination of Chloe Andersson and Clyne amassed just one point between the two, as each fell in consecutive sets.
However, the Lions were able snap their winless streak at No.5. Bustard, trailing in the match 1-0, battled back to claim a 6-2, set two win. The junior from New Port Richey, Fla. then proceeded to exchange points with her opponent in the super tiebreaker. Bustard outlasted the challenger and secured the Lions lone win with a 10-7 win.

The Lions return to action on Friday, February 26 against Concordia State University. It also marks the second of seven consecutive matches at their friendly confines. First serve is set for 3:00 p.m.
