SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo University women’s tennis team (9-4, 2-6 SSC) closed out the 2009 regular season by rolling past Sunshine State Conference opponent Eckerd College (0-15, 0-8 SSC) 9-0, Thursday evening from the SLU Tennis Center.

The Lions took control of the contest right from the start, sweeping doubles 3-0. Lina Benkirane and Gina Schifano swarmed Sonnervig and McLaughlin 8-2, while Jeanette McDonald and Shaena Keefe posted an 8-3 win. Lara King and Hannah Beard won by default in their match to give the Lions a 3-0 match lead heading into singles.

After Benkirane went up 3-0 in her match at the No. 1 singles spot, her opponent retired to give the Lions their fourth point of the afternoon. The Rest of the Lions followed suit, as they all posted hard earned victories to finish off the Tritons. Keefe and McDonald let up a combined one point in their match sweeps, while Schifano kept Buelow at bay winning 6-3, 6-1. King kept the shutout alive battling back after a first set defeat to win 6-1, 13-11. Beard once again claimed victory by default in her match, as she rounded out the Lions outstanding afternoon.

The Lions now wait seeding for the upcoming Sunshine State Conference Tournament in Boca Raton, Fla. hosted by Lynn University.
