SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo University women’s tennis team (8-12, 1-5 SSC) dropped their Sunshine State Conference match to the No. 35-ranked Florida Tech Panthers (19-3, 3-3 SSC), 6-3 Sunday afternoon from the SLU Tennis Center.
Poor weather set the noon time start back to 1:30 pm. The delay didn’t affect the Panthers play though as they collected a pair of victories in doubles play and took four out of six matches in singles action.
Shaena Keefe and Jeanette McDonald was the lone Lions’ pair to collect a win on Sunday, as they outlasted the Panthers team of Madrigal and Price, 8-6 in No. 2 doubles play. Lina Benkirane and Gina Schifano fell at the hands of Ramos and Greif, 8-3 at No. 1 doubles. While Brittany Fuhr and Lara King’s efforts were not enough at No. 3 doubles, losing 8-3.
Keefe and McDonald highlighted Lions singles play, as well, each recording hard-fought wins. Keefe, after dropping the first set of the match 3-6, responded with victories in the next two sets. She defeated Grief 6-2 in the second set and then went point-for-point with her opponent in the third and final set eventually winning 6-4.
McDonald had a little bit of an easier time with her opponent at No. 3 singles winning the set 6-2. The second set was a little more difficult for the Lions’ sophomore as the two exchanged points for the majority of the match. McDonald came through in the clutch though as she wrapped up the sets seventh point and a 7-6 set win.
Still, it was not enough as SLU could not match Florida Tech on the overall scoreboard losing the next three matches to fall 6-3.
The squad doesn’t take to the court again until Thursday, April 2 when they travel to Winter Park, Fla. to take on the Rollins College Tars in SSC play. First serve is set for 3:30 pm.
