LAKELAND, Fla. – The Saint Leo University women’s tennis team (7-11) dropped a 9-0 contest to the No.17-ranked Florida Southern College Moccasins, Tuesday afternoon from Lakeland, Fla.
The Lions got off to rocky start in doubles action dropping each of their three contests to the Mocs. The No. 2 duo of Jeanette McDonald and Shaena Keefe gave the Lions their best chances at victory but still dropped an 8-4 decision to Erin Conroy and Veronica Kovacikova. Lina Benkirane and Gina Schifano fell in the No. 1 spot while Lara King and Brittany Fuhr couldn’t match the offensive output of Baertsch and Carns in the No. 3 position.
Things didn’t get much better for Saint Leo in singles play as each of the Mocs won their sets decisively. McDonald and Schifano were the only two Lions to score two points in a set as they each fell 2-6, 6-0 in No. 3 and 4 singles, respectively. Benkirane dropped her match in straight sets, 0-6, 1-6 while Keefe fell in No. 2 singles 0-6, 0-6. The Mocs closed the afternoon by taking the final two matches of the day, one over No. 5 singles player King and Fuhr in the No. 6 position.
The Lions look to halt their three game skid on Wednesday, March 25, as they take on St. Olaf College from the SLU Tennis Center. First Serve is set for 3:00 pm.
