SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women’s tennis team (7-8) is on a roll having won six consecutive matches and seven of their last nine. The Lions latest victims come from the University of Indianapolis, as they defeated the Greyhounds, 8-1, in non-conference action from the SLU Tennis Center Tuesday afternoon.

In doubles play, No. 1 partners Lina Benkirane and Lara King were once again the tone-setters for SLU, as their 8-3 win seemed to spark the rest of the team as they took apart the Greyhounds. Jeannette McDonald and Shaena Keefe had the most impressive doubles victory at the No. 2 spot, winning impressively, 8-1. While the Gina Schifano and Taylor Cleaves didn’t disappoint at the No. 3 doubles spot, winning 8-4.

With a 3-0 lead heading into singles play, the Lions turned up the heat on Indianapolis, crancking out five of the six total singles matches victories.

In the No. 1 and No. 2 spot, both Benkirane and Keefe posted scores of 6-0, 6-1, officially deciding the match in the favor of the Lions. Still, SLU played all-out through the rest of the match, as McDonald surrendered only two points her entire match, winning in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. After securing a hard-fought first set win in the No. 4 doubles spot, Schifano breezed through the second set on her way to a 6-4, 6-1 triumph. Cleaves played another outstanding match for Saint Leo, as she posted a consecutive win, 6-1, 6-3. Cleaves has now won 12 consecutive singles or doubles matches.

The Lions now look forward to some very difficult competition as the Saints of Flagler College march in the SLU Tennis Center on Thursday, March 12.  The match is slated to begin at 3:00 pm.
