SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo University women’s tennis team (5-8) defeated the Eckerd College Tritons on the road Friday evening in St. Petersburg, Fla. The Lions impressive play on the court lead them to a decisive 8-1 win in non-conference action.

The two battled back and forth all day, fortunately for Lions fans the end decision ended on the side the Green and Gold. The action heated up quickly as the Lions No. 1 doubles team of Lina Benkirane and Lara King traded points with Sonnenig and Jenks the entire match, eventually leading to a super tie-breaker. In the tie-breaker, the Lions pair hit another gear as they accelerated past the Eckerd pair for a 9-8 (7-3) victory. Jeanette McDonald and Shaena Keefe took a much easier route in their match, as they won their match 8-2. While Gina Schifano and Taylor Cleaves conceded only one point the whole match as they won 8-1.

In singles action, Benkirane and Keefe ran through their opponents winning in consecutive sets. Although challenged in the first set, McDonald recovered well to blank her opponent in the second set, winning 7-5, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Schifano won 6-2, 6-1 in her match at the No. 4 spot, while Cleaves was convincing in her straight sets victory at the No. 5 singles spot.

The team will get a one day break before hitting the court on Monday, March 9 for a non-conference showdown with St. Cloud University. First serve is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
