SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo University women’s tennis team continues their outstanding play, now having won five consecutive matches after defeating Saint Cloud University, 8-1 in a non-conference match from the SLU Tennis Center Monday evening.

Newly named Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week, Lina Benkirane, got the Lions rolling in doubles action teaming with Lara King to defeat the pair of Doll and Freese, 8-3 in No. 1 doubles. The victories only got more impressive from their as Jeannette McDonald and Shaena Keefe didn’t give an inch as they shutout the SCU pair of Olsen and Lenz, 8-0. Gina Schifano and Taylor Cleaves made it a perfect run through doubles play, as the tandem were 8-2 winners over Boushek and Halloran.

Benkirane helped transition the Lions hot play over to singles action where the Green and Gold took five out of the six matches.

In No. 1 singles, Benkirane made quick work of Olsen, allowing only two points the entire match as she came out a 6-1, 6-1 winner. Freese tried to stay up with the Lions No. 2 singles player Keefe, but the battle of endurance fell on the side of Saint Leo, as she pulled away at the end, 6-3, 6-4. Both McDonald and Schifano won their matches in straight sets, McDonald winning her match 6-1 and 6-1 while Schifano was just two points shy of mimicking her teammate winning 6-1, 6-3. Cleaves ran away with her match 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 5 singles spot, as she helped put the finishing touches on an impressive Saint Leo victory.

The squad has now won six out of eight matches.

Saint Leo returns to the court for another non-conference match as they play host to the University of Indianapolis on Tuesday, March 10 from the SLU Tennis Center. First serve is set for 3:00 pm.
