Saint Leo, Fla. – Lina Benkirane was named women’s tennis Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week, it was announced by Michael J. Marcil.

Benkirane had a tremendous week for Saint Leo as she posted an 8-0 overall record in combined singles and doubles action. Her efforts on the court led the Lions to a 4-0 weekly mark, including two SSC wins.

In a 6-3 victory over Tampa, she defeated Alexandra Arnold 6-3, 6-3 in singles and teamed with Lara King for a 9-8 doubles victory. In an 8-1 win against Eckerd, she downed Carolina Sonnerig 6-1, 6-0 and again joined King for a 9-7 doubles decision. In an 8-1 win over St. Joseph's (Ind.), she dropped just one set in her singles victory and combined for an 8-2 doubles win with King. In an 8-1 victory versus St. Thomas, she downed Manuela Gil 6-1, 6-4 and posted an 8-4 doubles win with King.

After dropping the first six matches of the 2009 campaign, Saint Leo has stormed back to win five of their last seven matches with Benkirane helping lead the way.

Benkirane is just the third Saint Leo women's tennis player to earn the honor of SSC Player of the Week.

Benkirane looks to continue the Lions charge as they get set to take on St. Cloud State on Monday before the visitors from the University of Indianapolis visit the SLU Tennis Center on Tuesday, March 10. Both matches are scheduled to start at 3:00 pm.
