SAINT LEO, Fla. – Despite the outstanding efforts by current women’s soccer player Hannah Beard, who filled in for the Lions due to the rash of injuries being suffered by the squad,  the Saint Leo University women’s tennis team (0-4) dropped their fourth straight decision to the Northwood (Fla.) Seahawks (3-2), Friday evening at the SLU Tennis Center.

The Lions No. 1 doubles team of Lina Benkirane and Asmaa Tazi appeared to get Saint Leo going in the right direction winning their match 8-5 over NU tandem of Mikaela Seger and Fiorella Moggia. But two Seahawks’ victories later suddenly put SLU down 2-1 heading into singles play.

During singles action, Benkirane evened the match at two a piece, as she made quick work of her opponent Mikaela Seger, 7-5, 6-3. Unfortunately, that’s where the majority of the winning stopped as the results for four of the next five matches did not go in the Lions favor.

But Beard, a current woman’s soccer standout and former SLU Tennis player, surprised everyone on the court giving the team their third and final victory of the day. After dropping the first set 6-1, Beard battled back to win the second set 6-4 forcing a third set tiebreaker. In the set, Beard raced out to an early lead and did not look back escaping with a 10-5 win, claiming the set.

The Lions now have to wait until February 17 to try and claim their first victory of the season as Rollins College comes to the SLU Tennis Center. The match is set to begin at 3:00 pm
