Saint Leo, Fla. (March 19, 2008) – The No. 29 Saint Leo women’s tennis team (5-5) swept the University of Montevallo Falcons 9-0 Wednesday afternoon at the SLU Tennis Center. The Lions extended their winning streak to two matches.

For the second straight day, the Lions jumped on top of their opponent early and did not relinquish the lead. Each doubles pair made quick work of their competition. The No.1 duo of Lina Benkirane (So., Casablanca, Morocco) and Asmaa Tazi (Jr., Casablanca, Morocco) conquered the Falcons pair of Rachel Hartley and Kristi Kelly 8-1 while the Lions No. 2 duo of Shaena Keefe (So., Spring Hill, Fla.) and Taylor Cleaves (So., Norwell, Mass.) marched on to a 8-1 victory over Dorothy Sherman and Kelly Vaughn. The No. 3 position faired just as well for the Lions, as Veronica Queen (Fr., Valrico, Fla.) and Gina Schifano (So., Tampa, Fla.) made quick work of the Falcons’ Shasta Brown and Terrylisa Abdool 8-2.

The strong doubles play sparked a continuence of outstanding work by the singles competitors, as Benkirane got the Lions off on the right foot defeating the Falcons’ Hartley in two sets 6-2, 6-4. Tazi continued the Lions winning ways defeating Kristi Kelly 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 2 singles spot. Keefe rolled past the Falcons’ Brown 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 3 singles spot While Queen took surrendered only two points her entire match winning 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 4 singles spot. Schifano triumphed over Abdool 6-0, 6-1 and Cleaves finished off the victory winning 6-2, 6-2 in the No . 6 spot.
